Dear Mr. Fisher,
Although there's a saying "everyone's replaceable in their jobs", I'm not sure that's true with you! You have taken the Northstar Bands, especially the Marching Band, to levels other band directors can only dream of. You will leave behind some mighty big shoes to fill, but more importantly you will leave behind all of the life lessons you so proudly and consistently taught our children. Best of luck to you and your family!

Mr. Fisher and the Northstar Marching Band,
Thank you so much for marching at the Meadowbrook School Walk-a-Thon. It was so much fun to have you all there and your performance was super. What a wonderful experience for the younger students to inspire them to join the band someday. Your time was much appreciated.

Band members,
You did it! I was so excited to see you all marching down the small hill into Whitewaters stadium. When you all were performing, all the same emotions from years past came to me. I saw you perform in the beginning of the season and to see you at state, the difference is always so amazing. You all did excellent and I cannot say it enough!
Congratulations again Northstars! Keep the streak of pride alive.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Northstar Band!!!

What an "outstanding" performance you gave at the State Competition!! You should feel very proud of what you have accomplished. To the “New England Patriots” of marching band….Congratulations to the 2009 North Stars!!!! You’ve completed a successful season of performing each run through and show better than the previous. In addition, many of you achieved that “personal best” sometime during the season and will be able to hold that success/memory that you gave the energy it takes to be a Champion. To top it off, you were all amazingly rewarded the title “State Champs” while possibly achieving the highest score in the 24 year history of WSMA . Wow, a reward for your hard work ….that doesn’t all the time!

Staff: Thank you Mr. Fisher for leadings us and accepting our input early to develop and massage a complex, but yet achievable show that continues to raise the bar in the state. Many times it’s new to all of us to keep up with changing times, but thanks for believing and I look forward to more in the future (go synthesizer 2010). But the MVP of staff this year goes to Mr. Richland!! Wow, I was so amazed by his enthusiasm and creativity. His “running man” production and added visuals were perfect. Awesome Job!! In addition, Greg started a new platform that I just love for an exciting winds warm-up that will continue to help us achieve more success in the future.

Drum Majors: Let it be said that you too continued to strengthen the role of DM’s and raise the bar of expectations for future leaders. Thank you for all your help!!

Seniors: I wish you the best in your future, and know you will hold this great memory for life. At some point in your career you will be able to reference back to your band achievements and experience and smile and say “I am a North Star.” That’s pretty cool. Hope to see you join your fellow North Star Alumni (even parents) at future shows, cheering on your upcoming stars. Good luck!!

This is the big one! You guys know what to do! It's not about winning of losing. It's about leaving it all on the field. Go out there and do your best! Hey there north stars, I'm not really sure how many of you band members read this page, maybe Fish will read this out loud to you on the day of state. There were two main things i learned as a senior. The first thing that i learned is you are one band, and you create one sound, you work as a team and that is how things get done. the second thing i learned is for the seniors, leave everything out on the field, this is it, this is your last performance to show everyone how you shine. Remember you are the WAUKESHA NORTH MARCHING BAND. Good luck at state, and my Melliphone seniors make me proud!

10/14/2009
Way to go "NORTHSTARS" this past weekend at Cudahy and Ft. Atkinson!! Despite the "frigid" weather, not being able to feel your hands, missing band members (due to illness), you still managed to "SHINE"!!! Keep up the great work...you only have a couple of days until state!! Stay focused and use the remaining practices to fine tune your music and marching!!

""It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live..." said Albus Dumbledore in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter. A wise man, that Dumbledore. Truer words could not be spoken for just about everything in life, but for us as teachers, that quite possibly represents the hardest balancing act of our profession. If you think about it, it is almost schizophrenic. On one hand, we want our students to enjoy their accomplishments and take pleasure in the success of the moment. We know the value of having them review what they have learned and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
On the other hand, we have a constant desire to push them to higher and higher levels of accomplishment. Then we become so worried about getting them to the goal, we forget--and we allow them to forget--to enjoy the process. The enjoyment of the steps along the way, the beauty along the path they take to their accomplishments, is lost to the goal of getting there. We spend so much effort “dreaming” of future accomplishments for out students that we forget to “live” and enjoy each moment.”

First of all i want to say that I really miss of all you this season and wish I could be marching there by your side. If you haven't realized it yet your season is half over and you have not performed at a competition yet. You guys have rehearsed for many hours already, and am sure you are ready for Lake Park on Saturday. Freshman this is going to be your first competition, and I'm sure your nervous, but just remember how many of hours of rehearsal and how many run-throughs you have done. You will do great. Upperclassmen, lead by example, ease some anxiety and stay calm and have fun as always. Walk on the field with pride for prelims and show Lake Park what the 2009 Northstar Band is all about. Good luck and have fun, Dan Schmidt

Donny Lavrenz, dlavrenz3@gmail.com 09/02/2009
Madison, WI   North - 2009
First off congratulations! It may not seem like it now but the season is half over. You have already put in many hours of rehearsal and now the fun stuff is coming up...

Good Luck at the football game! Freshman, it will be your first taste of performing and some anxiety is certain to accompany. Just take a breath and do what you have already done a hundred times. Upperclassmen, continue to lead and send the band to new heights.

The Northstar Band makes their glorious return to Lake Park this year. Swagger on in and show them what Wisconsin has to offer. There is no doubt some incredible bands will be performing so learn what you can from them as well.

Even though I was only around for a short time, I appreciate the chance you gave me to work with all of you. The rest of the staff you have this year is incredible. Be sure to take advantage of everything they offer.

Once again, good luck this season! I will be paying close attention when I cannot watch in person.
Make this season the most memorable yet!!!

With Pride,
Donny Lavrenz

Congratulations on the Best Guard Award!!!

Guard: Each year is very unique for me and this year I felt you had to work very hard for the win. It was by no means handed to you. You endured many changes in August and September and kept up with the challenges. When I asked you to take an individual approach and make sure you personally were doing your part your response was awesome at the end of September. I think the Merrill weekend the team work really came together and continued to grow in great volume through the end of the season.

Band: I have said it many times but it is so exciting when it all comes together and worth the pain it took to get there. I hope you all enjoy watching the DVD it was a great final performance one to be very proud of for years to come.

Staff: Hard work did pay off and this year was a perfect example of not looking back only forward to improve each performance. Thank you for believing in me and a big “thanks” to Mel for working with all of us and making it happen.

Thank you for the great season and looking forward to our trip to Florida together.

WOW, where do we begin...
First, (obviously) congrats are in order!! Not for the win at state, but for each of you doing your very best. It's an old adage, (which I know Mr. Fisher has repeated many times), but winning is simply a result which you often have no control over. You are, however, in complete control of your own personal performance. A win of this caliber only happens when ALL of you strive to do your best. It takes talent and dedication at every level from the staff, to the DM's to each and every band member and to the supporting crew and parents. It all has to come together at the right time and for the right reasons. You see what happens when it does.
We've made many new friends this past season, revisited many old friendships and have about 1,500 digital memories (and hours of video) that we'll cherish forever. We've even become "Mom and Dad" to many of the band members. I think its finally sunk in that this is our last season with our "band family" and that things are about to change pretty dramatically. We'll miss all of you and our life that has revolved around North, but at the same time are looking forward to our new life which begins in the months ahead.
We've been so proud of you Donny for so very many things, but this one will stand out forever. This has truly been a special time in our lives and we will remember it forever.
Thank you staff, parents, band members and especially you Donny.
We love you!!
Dad and Mom

Some Things I will remember from 2008:
- New Uniforms after a million years! Thanks Mr. Fisher. Perfect! Elbows!
- Boxes come in many sizes and shapes. Drill was painful.
- We added “Superman with an attitude” and Superman is a move not the “lung page”
- T-Page with rifle toss and daughter. Visa commercial and new drill in opener.
- Donny running to Dr. Beat and knowing all tempos
- Missing Lake Park and very worried. DC Everest awesome again!
- Amazingly difficult flute and clarinet parts
- Low Brass stories, working saxophone drill at the end. Changing all drum drill.
- Great State warm-up. Marching gods. Go trumpets.
- I can list 16 names of students in the 2008 band
- Winning. Winning Music. Winning Marching. Guard again. My son won drums.
- Still can’t hum a section of the show for longer than 5 seconds
- Talking, and standing at attention at the end of state. Greg comment.
- Tiki torch at State
- Going to Florida!!!

Amazing results Northstars!

I truly felt our closest competitors had great shows and performed them very well. But you were rewarded the title “Champion” for doing exactly what we asked and that is “your personal best”. Congratulations North on your 1st place finish!! You earned it!! Keep the memory for life as I will!!!

I will personally remember this year for all the enduring energy it took as a Northstar team through our journey. Students, I apologize again for sooooo many changes and adjustments and thank you for your extra efforts to make it all happen with such precision! I also thank all the staff for putting up with so many adjustments and not ignoring me each time I had a new idea. In particular, Mel for being so blunt and keeping us from “split focus” and Greg for patiently working with me and knowing every detail about the show and of course a BIG thanks to Mr. Fisher for giving me the opportunity to express my ideas and helping put my thoughts into play (late nights) without throwing me off the back of the stadium stands. The journey was an incredible challenge, although fun and rewarding, I promise to make it better for all next year!

Seniors: I wish you the best in your future. These memories and stories (good or bad) about band will last a life time. But you can always look back at your marching band experience and say hard work does pay off and “smile” because you as leaders truly earned the title “State Champions”. Don’t forget to visit us in the future and try to have a “Figure Eight” party.

Best of luck to all!

Heartfelt Congratulations to all the members and staff of the Northstar Marching Band on a fantastic performance at Whitewater on Saturday evening. You should all be very proud of yourselves!
I think Henry Ford said it best: "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." That is definitely what happened on Saturday night!

Congratulations!! What an amazing weekend and season! We are band parents that could not be more proud! To watch the band come together and improve in so many areas has been impressive. Thank you Mr. Fisher and all of the staff for teaching not only marching band lessons, but lifelong lessons. The quality and character of the Northstar Band is evident far beyond the awards received on the field!

WOW! What an outstanding year! Congratulations on another guard championship and particularly on the music championship. This has been our 11th year in the band program and Waukesha should be proud of the extraordinary band programs it has. A special thanks to Jim Doepke and Steve Fisher for being such excellent leaders and role models to the students and parents. Additional thanks to Sandy and Mel for the incredible work they do with the state champion guard. Roman, you always seem to get everyone going in the right direction! For all of us who have watched band camp and wondered what in the world this was leading to (sometime it's hard to visualize the goal), remember that Martin Luther King Jr said: "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." Congratulations; a forever Waukesha North band family

Congratulations Northstars!! You all did your personal best which is fantastic, however, with doing that for yourself you all came together as one and it showed with the band becoming the AAAA Champions of 2008!! What a great accomplishment!! Thank you to the staff who put so much of themselves into teaching our kids more than just the normal "band" stuff and reaping the rewards of seeing these wonderful students do wonderful things!! They will enjoy these memories forever!
Looking forward to the upcoming parades and trip to Florida.

I am so proud of each and every person in the band. We worked so hard to get where we are today and even though the changes we kept making were so frustrating at times, we made it through. I appreciate all the hours of marching you guys put in and for Roman, Greg, Fish, Sandy, and Mel's putting up with our "fruitiness." Seniors we love you so much and there aren't words to describe how much we will miss you! Way to go Northstars! Congrats on our championship!!!!

Northstars-

What an amazing performance last night!! Without a doubt, everyone "left it all on the field." Alto saxes- great job marching and playing, especially the freshman. I may have been hard on you at times but I only did it because I cared. Take with you the work ethic into next year's season and you'll do just fine.

Also,I want to say "thank you" to Mr.Fisher for everything you've taught me. As you might remember, my first day of marching band was on the first day of band camp. When things got tough, you believed in me and gave me confidence, and for that I am truely grateful. Your inspiration and leadership to others is remarkable. Thanks for all those little "life lessons" that made all the difference.

CONGRATULATIONS !! You did it !!
I am so proud of The Northstar Band and your continued outstanding accomplishments ! Kudos to Director Steve Fisher and the ENTIRE Northstar Marching Band staff on achieving yet another tremendous marching band season, highlighted by the 2008 Wisconsin AAAA Marching Band Championship. The Northstar Band staff is "second to none" and includes the "Best of the Best" instructors in the State of Wisconsin. It goes without saying that the Northstar Band parents are hugely supportive and an integral component in the Northstar Band's continued success !
There are many life-lessons taught and learned through this educational endeavor, the most important being setting a goal and having the commitment to follow-through and accomplish that said goal. And accomplish that goal...you DID !!
Enjoy the win and together, savor this accomplishment. Each of you deserve it ! I am profoundly proud of each student member and staff member comprising The Northstar Band.

Congratulations Northstars on your rewarding finish at State!

Your visual performance at state was outstanding! Watch the DVD and you will see what you have accomplished that no other competitors dare to attempt. Look at the meshing wedges and the triple rotation in Movement 4 that were performed at 97% accuracy. AWESOME!! Take a close look at the individual marching which had such emotion and drive that truly represents the marching style of the Northstar band. Thank you!!!

I also want to thank you for your extra energy and great improvement of rehearsal etiquette. Not only did this make for one of my favorite marching band seasons, but it truly allowed you to achieve the Northstar goal of achieving your personal best! Remember, it is teamwork, trust, and camaraderie that led you to that memorable night in Whitewater!

The combination of each these extra efforts and a great show gave the ultimate reward of winning!!! I am very proud you. Please enjoy it; you earned it…..a memory for life!!

Keep the toes up, utilize upper body technique and don’t forget to have a figure “8” party.

And Mr.Fisher, thanks for making us work so hard, and telling us that being a champion is better than being a winner, you really inspired me to be the best I could be this year. WOW! What a spectacular group of young individuals! I have watched the Northstar band closely for six years and have never failed to be amazed at the dedication of the teachers, staff, and especially the students. I saw this displayed at the homecoming half-time show when I saw several band members, who obviously had other commitments prior to the field show, sprinting across the field to join their fellow band members as they prepared to march out onto the field. Students in ther groups may not have shown the same commitment. Sadly, today concludes final chapter in my experience as a band parent. It's been a wonderful journey for me as I have watched the students grow and mature. You may never know how much we admire you for all of your hard work, or how proud we as band parents are of each and every one of you. I know that you will be awsome at Whitewater today, and whatever the outcome, just remember that you already are, and always will be, champions. "DO IT NORTHSTARS!!!"

WOW. what a rehersal. Today was the best day i've had in a long time. The hallway was rocking and everyone was SO focused today during rehersal. The senior dinner was AWESOME.
I know we have it in us to do what we need to do. It's time to take it all onto the field and leave it on there, and show everyone who we are..WAUKESHA NORTH.
Thank you to everyone; band has made my high school career. I cannot even express the emotion. All of you are my family, and my friends.
Flutes: you guys were amazing this year. thanks for all your hard work. always remember 10/12/07. =)
Seniors: WE MADE IT! thanks for an AWESOME 4 YEARS. Lets ROCK it tomorrow and show what 2008 is all about. =D

Tomorrow, rock it out. WHO ARE WE!? WAUKESHA NORTH!

a very proud North senior band parent 10/19/2007
Good luck tomorrow at State! This is my last year to watch you compete at Whitewater as a band parent and I want you all to know how proud you make us parents. All of the music memorizing, learning the drill, the hours and hours of practice, during school, Monday nights, extra sectionals...you've all put in so much energy and time. Now on Saturday put your heart into your performance and you will have something you will always be proud to remember! There's a reason that you've been coming out on top so far this fall...you're playing a great show with an outstanding group of young people. The freshmen and sophomores have learned what it takes to compete at a high level and the juniors and seniors have become leaders. You may not realize it now. But 5, 10 and even 25 years from now you will look back at these band years and see how much you grew as people. So go out there tomorrow and show everyone what a great band you are. Play out with emotion and excitement. Enjoy it! Shine like Northstars!!!

Great show on Sunday. I was not really excited to be coming to Fort knowing that you had to play inside. WOW! I was so glad I went. You were exciting to watch and to hear the sound that only the Northstar band can make was even better inside. Thanks for a great show. Now it will be one last show- PERSONAL BEST!

Northstars: We have had the most successful season that our program has seen in a long time and I am proud of each and every one of you. However, this week we really need to stay focused on our objectives. The season is NOT over yet. We have MUCH to improve on in visual, music, percussion, and guard. Please remember that we have 6 DAYS left to make it PERFECT. If you have already thought that it's over; you're wrong. It's NOT over. In fact, it hasn't even begun...

Best Wishes this week!
Dana Wielgus

I had the honor of supporting the Waukesha Northstar band this weekend for the DC EVEREST and MERRILL overnighter as a chaperone.
The band members performed and acted in a responsible, positive and honorable way the entire weekend.
I appreciate the opportunity to support this wonderful group of young individuals.
Keep up the good work...Set your goals high.

WOW. northstars, in my 4 years dedication to this program, NEVER have I been prouder to be apart of this group than I was this weekend. I am VERY proud of each and every one of you. Let's really stay focused these final two weeks. Seniors, we have 3 shows left-lets make them count. Everyone else, think about Doepke's favorite quote:

"It is easier to be better than someone else than the best you can be."

and Bova's:

"If you HESITATE, you WONT succeed."

and Fisher's

"It is better to come out as a champion than it is to be a winner."

Lets make it happen.
I love each and every one of you with all my hearts.

I stumbled across this site while looking at classmates.com. I am so glad to see the North band program thriving. Both of my children were so heavily influenced by my band activities (and stories) while I attended North, that they chose to be involved in band during thier High School years. Their only dissapiontment was NO MARCHING band. That is one area North has always excelled in and I am proud to say I was involved at the very begining. I am sad to say I missed the Band reunion a few years ago, I would have most definitely participated in it. Keep up the great work! And God Bles you all! The Northstar band has always been proud, even from its inception and early years. Keep up the hard work which makes us all stand a little taller, from a former band member.
